Hatta Pumped Storage Hydro

A Pumped Storage Hydro Power Plant is currently being constructed near the community of Hatta in the Hajar Mountains, situated approximately 140 km southeast of Dubai. The project entails utilizing the existing Saad Hatta Al Awwal Dam as the lower reservoir, while the upper reservoir will be positioned roughly 150 meters higher. These reservoirs will be interconnected via a 1.2 km long pressure tunnel.

To facilitate the construction, the upper reservoir will feature two roller-compacted concrete dams, standing at heights of approximately 35 meters and 70 meters respectively. Additionally, a powerhouse will be established, housing two units capable of generating a combined net power output of 250MW during a 6-hour generation cycle.

Furthermore, the project encompasses the construction of two road tunnels, measuring around 470 meters and 440 meters respectively, employing blast excavation techniques. The development also includes the creation of reinforced outflow and intake structures, several ancillary buildings, as well as the installation of mechanical and electrical systems.

In recognition of the challenging access areas involved in the high-level works, Spider Access was awarded the project in 2020-2021. Their expertise in utilizing a combination of specialized methods such as lead rock climbing/mountaineering and rope access techniques, along with a trained and skilled team, proved instrumental in ensuring successful execution of the project in these difficult-to-reach locations.

SCOPE OF WORK

Throughout the project, Spider Access encountered numerous challenges, with the most notable ones including:

  • Ensuring safe access to work positions.
  • Mitigating the risks associated with falling objects.
  • Safely lifting heavy equipment.
  • Managing the movement of substantial amounts of soil and rocks while considering the continuous flow of construction traffic beneath the work areas.

These works took place in the natural environment of the Hajar Mountains, which is characterized by irregular landscapes and significant weathering of the bedrock. Consequently, the presence of loose stoneson the slopes posed a stability risk.

To overcome these challenges, the Spider Access team utilized lead rock climbing and mountaineering techniques to reach inaccessible areas. Solid bedrocks were selected as anchor points in accordance with IRATA standards. Prior to installing the anchor points, a geologist from the Spider Access team conducted a thorough geological survey to identify the most suitable positions. The focus was on selecting non-weathered solid rocks with minimal open cracks and metamorphic alterations.

Heavy equipment lifting and rescue drills were executed using tension lines for rigging, hauling systems, and petrol-powered winches. Special traffic management procedures were implemented at the work area to minimize the risk of hazardous rocks falling onto the road.

Spider Access successfully addressed these challenges by applying specialized techniques and adhering to strict safety measures. Their comprehensive approach ensured the project’s progress while effectively managing the unique conditions presented by the Hajar Mountains’ landscape.
