Etihad Towers

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Spider Access was awarded a prestigious four-year contract for high-level façade cleaning services at the iconic Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi. The project covered four of the five towers, requiring specialized rope access cleaning techniques and Building Maintenance Unit (BMU) operations to ensure efficient access to hard-to-reach areas. Our commitment to safety, quality, and innovation established Spider Access as a trusted partner for maintaining one of Abu Dhabi’s most recognized landmarks.

SCOPE OF WORK

Spider Access is responsible for the complete façade glazing of four towers, each rising to 70 floors, including podium levels. Our work includes:

  • Rope access cleaning of entire façades, ensuring safety and efficiency.
  • The BMU support team is providing ongoing façade maintenance.
  • Four comprehensive cleanings per year for each tower to maintain the towers’ pristine appearance.
  • Prompt maintenance support in collaboration with the Towers’ FM team.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

Challenge 1: Strong Winds
  • The towers’ location and design create wind challenges that complicate rope rigging and façade cleaning.
Our Solution:
  • Spider Access deployed IRATA Level 3 supervisors on rooftops, ground support teams, and on-rope operatives equipped with real-time wind monitoring and communication systems. This enabled quick decision-making to secure or remove ropes, ensuring safety and minimizing disruption.
Challenge 2: Lack of Ground Anchor Rigging Points
Our Solution:
  • Initially, the towers lacked permanent rigging points for rope access, causing delays with temporary counterweight baskets. Spider Access designed and installed custom permanent anchor points across all four towers. This improved efficiency, enhanced safety, and reduced project timelines.

To deliver this complex project, Spider Access deployed a multi-skilled, certified team including:

  • Project Managers with PMP, Lead Auditor, and NEBOSH certifications.
