ZAYED NATIONAL MUSEUM

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This case study provides an overview of the successful completion of a project involving the installation of skylights and a range of high-level technical works across Pods 1, 2, 4, and 5 in Zayed National Museum, Abu Dhabi under AES (Advanced Engineered Solutions). The project scope included the installation of skylights, alongside critical tasks such as pressure plate installation, silicone application, cable pulling, structural lifting, bolt tightening, and panel installation. A unique aspect of the project was the collaborative use of a boom for lifting glasses and panels to their installation locations, with a specialized Spider Access Team handling the precise installation process.

SCOPE OF WORK

SERVICES PROVIDED

Skylight Installation: The primary objective was the installation of custom skylights on Pods 1, 2, 4 and 5, ensuring each skylight was properly aligned, sealed, and structurally sound.

High-Level Technical Tasks: The project also included completing various technical works essential for the structural integrity and functionality of the pods. These tasks included but were not limited to:

  • Pressure Plate Installation: Ensuring secure attachments and structural stability for each pod.
  • Cable Pulling: Laying and securing cables across the pods for electrical connections.
  • Structural Lifting: Using heavy-duty equipment to lift and position large structural elements safely.
  • Bolt Tightening: Ensuring all bolts were securely fastened to meet the structural design requirements.
  • Panel Installation: Installing exterior and interior panels to finalize the pod structure

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

Height and Access Challenges: The elevated pods presented unique access challenges. The combination of the boo lift for material transport and the Spider Team for installation provided an efficient solution to these challenges, ensuring the materials were handled safely and quickly.
Coordination and Timing: Coordinating the use of the boom lift and Spider Team required careful timing and scheduling to avoid delays and ensure smooth transitions between tasks. The project team used a collaborative approach to synchronize efforts, reducing downtime and optimizing workflow.
Weather and Environmental Conditions: External factors like weather could delay the installation of panels and skylights. To mitigate this, the team employed flexible scheduling, allowing work to proceed when conditions were favorable.

EXECUTION METHODOLOGY

Boom Lift: As part of the execution, a boom lift was utilized to raise heavy glass panels and other components to the required height and locations for installation. This ensured that the materials were efficiently positioned for the next phase of the work.

Spider Team Installation: Once the materials were in place, the Spider Team, a specialized team known for their expertise in working at heights, conducted the precise installation of the skylights, glass panels, and other technical components. Their skillset was essential in ensuring the installation was both safe and accurate, especially in the challenging environments presented by the elevated pods.

RESULTS & IMPACTS

All skylights and panels were installed successfully across Pods 1, 2, 4, and 5, meeting all technical, safety, and aesthetic requirements.
The project was completed on schedule, with efficient coordination between the use of the boom lift and the Spider Team’s precise installation techniques. Safety protocols were strictly adhered to, with no incidents reported during the high-level technical works. The outcome was a fully functional and visually cohesive set of pods, equipped with high-quality skylight and secure, well-installed panels.
